| Due
to the extreme wealthy cacao period,
which lasted until the early 80’s of the
past
century, Ilhéus has some impressive
architecture spread out over the city.

House of Jorge Amado
The house of the world famous novelist Jorge Amado,
the Palácio do Paranaguá,
the Nossa Senhora da Piedade church
and the big São Sebastião cathedral,
all in
the centre, are beyond those characteristic
buildings.
The Bataclan
The “Bataclan” at Avenida 2 de Julho
in
the centre, once a popular hangout for the
wealthy cacao coroneis (landowners),
has recently been renovated and now has
various restaurants, bars and terraces.
Mercado Artesanato
At the Mercado Artesanato, near the old
harbor district, you can buy interesting,
local handmade art, clothes and the usual
tourist stuff. Local artist Pizute is well
known for his berimbau’s, the instrument
that locals use while practicing capoeira.
