In
the year 1500 the local Tupinambá indian
tribe saw the first European ships coming
in and made the first contact with white
people on their territory.
In 1538 the Portuguese occupiers started
with the construction of engenhos, little
farmhouses on the sugar plantations,
where they let the Tupinambás work for
them as slaves. After centuries, the humiliation
and suffering is over although
nowadays the Tupinambás still struggle
to keep their identity and traditions alive.
