In the year 1500 the local Tupinambá indian
tribe saw the first European ships coming
in and made the first contact with white
people on their territory.

In 1538 the Portuguese occupiers started
with the construction of engenhos, little farmhouses on the sugar plantations,
where they let the Tupinambás work for
them as slaves. After centuries, the humiliation and suffering is over although
nowadays the Tupinambás still struggle
to keep their identity and traditions alive.

Especially out of season Olivença is a
very quiet village which makes it an ideal
place for people who want to enjoy the
lovely surrounding beaches and tropical
forest. There are some pleasant little
restaurants and bars in town. Get to
know more about the surrounding
beaches here.

The “Backdoor” beach is very good for surfing. Among surfistas, Olivença is known for their talents and national champions!

The little stream that contains the healing
water starts on a hill just outside Olivença
and contains iron, magnesium and jodium. In
the surrounding area of the stream grows a
more or less radio active plant that is called
“cainana” which gives the stream its healing
power. The healing water of Tororomba is
known in many parts of the world. There is
even a doctor from Paris that sends patients
with skin diseases and/or stomach problems
for a treatment to Olivença.

Father Camilo Torrand, one of the biggest
botanic enthusiasts that ever visited Olivença,
took the healing water to France where he
analyzed the water in specialized laborato-
ries, concluding that the quality of this mineral
water is among the best in the world! Another
figure that has enthusiastically investigated
the waters has been Father Enrique Failla.

In various swimming pools and fountains you
can enjoy the water at the “Parque Aquático
do Tororomba”
. There are several bars and
restaurants that offer snacks, drinks and
complete meals. Entrance is R$ 2,- for adults
(September 2006) - children R$ 1,-.
The Centro Cultural is located up the hill behind
the Water Park of Tororomba. It is especially
used as a gathering point where local Indians
keep their rituals and myths alive by performing
acts and telling stories.

The first church in Olivenca, the Nossa
Senhora da Escada church, was built by the
Jesuits, early 18th century, in the very centre
of the little village on top of the hill.

Nowadays the steep “Praça Cláudio Magalhães”
-square fronting the church is surrounded with
houses, little bars, schools and grocery stores.
