Beaches south of Ilhéus
In general, the beaches south of
Ilheus are wide with clear, fine sand. Some parts
further
south are rocky and have wilder water with big waves,
like Backdoor, a popular spot for
surfers. To go to the beginning of the Praia
do Sul take the Hernani
Sá or Nelson
Costa
bus and get off at the Opaba Praia Hotel. The Nossa
Senhora da Vitória bus will take you
to the Praia do Sul and the beginning of Praia
dos Milionários. The Acuipe
bus will pass
by all of the beaches listed below. The Aguas
de Olivença bus goes as far as the
Canabrava beach while the Olivença
bus will take you to Backdoor and Batuba.

Praia
do Sul - 4 km
Please don’t let the slightly
polluted beach entrance at the
very beginning of Praia do Sul (Nelson Costa neighborhood)
discourage you to visit the beach. Once there, you
will see
clean, wide beaches with fine sand. The first entrance
has
some cabanas and gets crowded during the weekend.
It is
popular among surfers. For a quiet spot on the beach
just
walk for about 7 minutes to the right (south). |

Praia
dos Milionários - 7 km
The “beach from the millionaires”
begins after about 6 km on
the road Ilhéus - Olivença. Lots of
pousadas and cabanas
surround this area. The most popular spot on this
beach is
the Cabana Gabriela (9 km) and also the surrounding
cabanas
and restaurants attract a big crowd during the weekends
and
vacations. The quality of the food in this area
is surprisingly
good. |

Cururupe
- 12 km
Where the Rio Cururupe river ends
up in the Atlantic Ocean,
the Cururupe beach begins. There’s a handful
of pousadas,
hotels, restaurants and cabanas in this picturesque
area.
You can take a swim in the dark watered river like
the locals
do, or enjoy the wide beaches. |

Backdoor
- (village of Olivença) - 18 km
Backdoor beach begins just before
you enter Olivença. The
beach is rocky but has some good spots where you
can
swim. The first part of Backdoor is in front of
the hotel Village
Backdoor and has some small rock-free strokes where
it is
good to swim. The second part of the beach is at
the begin-
ning of the town. A big stroke of beach and lots
of cabanas
make this an excellent beach to spend a sunny day.
Most of
all Backdoor is very popular among surfers. Between
the
two beaches there is a rocky part of the coast where
surfers
get into the water to do their thing. Championship
matches are
held here frequently. |

Batuba
- (village of Olivença) - 19 km
Batuba is the most central beach.
Rocky, but also plenty of
clear space to take a dip in the water. Apart from
the fact the
beach lies on a beautiful location, it is also practical
due to the
fact that it is only a couple of yards away from
the main road.
Most of the little cabanas serve all kinds of drinks
and food
and play loud, tropical music. |

Cai
n'Água (Milagres) - 20 km
This beach is less rocky then the
beaches in the centre of
Olivença. Among locals this beach is also
called Milagres.
Frequently there are big waves here that attract
local
surfers. There are a few lovely beach houses that
are also
for rent during holidays. Although close to Olivença,
this
beach gives you the feeling of being far away from
the
civilized world. There is only one cabana on this
beach. |

Praia
do Jairi - 23 km
Yet another big stroke of beach
with a few rocks and a half
a dozen of cabanas packed together on the point
where you
turn to the canabrava beach. There you can eat some
tasteful
sea food and get a cold drink. It’s a very
nice spot with a
generally calm sea and a refreshing see breeze. |

Canabrava
- 24,5 km
The beach in the Canabrava area
is very spacious and
the water is calmer in this part. It’s one
of the reasons why
there are two resorts in the area. The luxurious
Canabrava
Resort and the eco resort of Tororomba. Both resorts
have
cabanas and bars on the beach that also may be used
by
visitors. |

Beach
to Acuípe -
33 km
The beach pictured left is the beach
that leads to the
deserted beaches of Acuipe. Any time of year it
is possible
you walk for a few miles without running into anybody.
There
will be a little photo gallery coming soon on this
page about
this peaceful area. |
