BEACHES IN AND NEAR PONTAL

In general, all of the beaches in Ilhéus and the
surrounding area are all wide and plane with
fine, white sand and palm trees. The beaches
south of Ilhéus have lots of nice cabanas where
you can listen to all sorts of (mainly) local music.

The cabanas offer a wide variety in drinks and
especially (sea)food. The quality of the food is
surprisingly good at most of the cabanas. The
south beaches can get very crowded in the
weekends and during the holidays.

North from Ilhéus you will find less cabanas and
less crowded beaches such as Ponta da Tulha
(17 km), Ponta do Ramo (27 km) and Pé de Serra
(Serra Grande, 34 km). Further north on the road
to Itacaré, hidden away between the rocky coast
of the Atlantic rainforest, you will find breathtaking
beaches like Havaizinho and Itacarezinho.

Beaches of Pontal, Novo Brasilia and Morro de Pernambuco
Actually, the Pontal neighborhood doesn’t have any beaches. Apart from some little
strokes of dark mud when the tide is low, the only stroke of sand that deserves the word
beach is in Nova Brasilia, the neighborhood next to Pontal. Because of its size the locals
call it “Prainha”, which means little beach. The point where the Praia do Sul begins is also
in Nova Brasilia. The small beaches of Morro de Pernambuco are surprisingly beautiful.
Praia da Concha at low tide is actually a little piece of paradise.

Prainha - Pontal / Nova Brasilia - 2 km
Next to the Morro de Pernambuco and with a nice view on
Ilhéus at the other side of the Rio Cachoeira river, the location
of Prainha is very pretty. The presence of some little bars, a
restaurant and a hamburger cabana nearby keeps you
wondering why this little beach is not as popular with locals
as it should be.

Praia da Concha - Morro de Pernambuco - 2 km
This little piece of paradise is hidden away behind the rocky
hills of the Morro de Pernambuco. Well known by the locals
but rarely seen by tourists. At first sight the Morro doesn’t
seem that attractive, but don’t let it fool you. The side of the
mountain that can not been seen definitely deserves your
attention. Walk up the hill to the lighthouse and enjoy the view!

Urubu - Beginning of Praia do Sul - 2 km
There are only reefs and small strokes of sand from this point
up to the Opaba Hotel a little further down south. Locals rarely
visit this beach and only use it as an entrance to the Praia da
Concha. There is even a tiny, wooden shanty town along the
beach that makes this part of the Praia do Sul even less
attractive. The friendly people that live there don’t seem to
matter. Although not an official name, a bar owning fisherman
said the beach is called “Urubu”, referring to the amount of
vultures on the reefs.
