BEACHES NORTH OF ILHÉUS

In general, all of the beaches in Ilhéus and the
surrounding area are all wide and plane with
fine, white sand and palm trees. The beaches
south of Ilhéus have lots of nice cabanas where
you can listen to all sorts of (mainly) local music.

The cabanas offer a wide variety in drinks and
especially (sea)food. The quality of the food is
surprisingly good at most of the cabanas. The
south beaches can get very crowded in the
weekends and during the holidays.

North from Ilhéus you will find less cabanas and
less crowded beaches such as Ponta da Tulha
(17 km), Ponta do Ramo (27 km) and Pé de Serra
(Serra Grande, 34 km). Further north on the road
to Itacaré, hidden away between the rocky coast
of the Atlantic rainforest, you will find breathtaking
beaches like Havaizinho and Itacarezinho.

Beaches north of Ilhéus
The big difference between the south and the north beaches is that the beaches up
north are less developed speaking in terms of tourism. There are only a few little
cabanas spread out over the entire coast line. However, as the beauty of the area is
being discovered by tourists, there are more hotels and pousadas built in the north
nowadays than in the south. The majority of the beaches further up north are unspoiled
and hidden away between the rocky coast lines of the Atlantic Rainforest. Pieces of
paradise such as Havaizinho (deserted) and Itacarezinho (with a restaurant and
some cabanas) definitely deserve a visit. Both are about 15 km south of Itacaré.

São Miguel - 5 km
The beach of São Miguel is clearly not developed for tourism
as the neighborhood is kind of isolated. Locals do like the
beach though and often go for a drink or a bite to eat in one
of the few cabanas that the beach has.

Praia do Norte - 6 km
As soon as you have crossed the bridge over the Rio
Almada river, on the coastal road that leads to Itacaré, you
will get to São Domingos where the Praia do Norte begins.
Right at the very beginning there are some cabanas situated
at the beach. Especially on Sunday afternoon there are a lot
of locals packing the terraces listening and dancing to loud
popular music. Only a little further north, passed the Eden
Village
hotel there are some pretty strokes of fine sand all
the way up to Ponta da Tulha.

Ponta da Tulha - 17 km
Ponta da Tulha is a pleasant, simple little village with some
decent pousadas and lovely beaches. The picture on top of
this page is actually taken on the beach just outside the south
part of town. There are some nice cabanas that serve food
and drinks close to the central beach. Growing in popularity,
there are a few new pousadas being build in the area. Ponta
da Tulha is further known for its lively carnival.

Praia de Mamoan - 21 km
Wide, tranquil beaches in a beautiful surrounding. While
walking the beaches you could imagine how Brazil would
have looked like when the first sailors set foot on land.
There is a tiny village that has some little cabanas and bars
where they serve drinks and food in the weekend and
during holiday season.

Ponta do Ramo - 27 km
Throughout big parts of the year the beaches here are
practically deserted. Apart from the beach entrance, there
are no cabanas nearby. The sea is quit calm and the beach
is wide with clear, fine sand. A breathtaking location during
a walk along the coast with low tide.

Pé de Serra (Serra Grande) - 34 km
Before going up the hill to Serra Grande there is the Pé da
Serra Grande, the foot from the Serra Grande. The water
here is excellent for surfing. Literally, the beach and its few
cabanas and pousadas stand a bit in the shade of the big hill
from where you can enjoy a marvelous view of the southern
part of the north coast.

Itacarezinho - 53 km
Palm trees, white sand, clear blue water, a good restaurant
and some nice cabanas; the works. Itacarezinho is one of
the best beaches to spend an entire day relaxing. The place
seems to have a tranquilizing effect on the people there.
Families, lovers, friends and loners come here to enjoy the
unique atmosphere and the surrounding beauty of the nature.

Havaizinho - 56 km
Little Hawaii is hidden away somewhere at the point where
the Atlantic Rainforest meets the rocky shore of the Atlantic
Ocean. The beach, captured between to rocky coast ends,
is small but breathtaking. You can only reach the beach after
a 25 minute walk through the jungle which makes the place
even more mystic. Expect to pay an entrance fee of about
R$ 5 during the summer period. The money is said to be used
to conserve the area.
