BEACHES IN ILHÉUS AND THE REGION

In general, all of the beaches in Ilhéus and the
surrounding area are all wide and plane with
fine, white sand and palm trees. The beaches
south of Ilhéus have lots of nice cabanas where
you can listen to all sorts of (mainly) local music.

The cabanas offer a wide variety in drinks and
especially (sea)food. The quality of the food is
surprisingly good at most of the cabanas. The
south beaches can get very crowded in the
weekends and during the holidays.

North from Ilhéus you will find less cabanas and
less crowded beaches such as Ponta da Tulha
(17 km), Ponta do Ramo (27 km) and Pé de Serra
(Serra Grande, 34 km). Further north on the road
to Itacaré, hidden away between the rocky coast
of the Atlantic rainforest, you will find breathtaking
beaches like Havaizinho and Itacarezinho.

Beaches in the central part of Ilhéus
The beaches in the centre of Ilhéus like the Praia da Avenida, Praia do Cristo and, at
the north side of town, Praia do Malhado and Praia do Marciano are not as pretty as
they used to be due to the effects of the construction of the new harbor. Still, all of these
beaches and also Boca da Barra remain popular among the locals.

Praia da Avenida - centre
Apart from a couple of simple bar-restaurants and some tiny
barracas at the point where the streets of Avenida Soares
Lopes and Avenida 2 de Julho meet, there are no stands
near the beach itself thanks to the construction of the new
harbor at the north side. The water used to be a lot closer to
the “boulevard”. Nowadays you have to walk through some
little sand dunes, grassy land or football fields before getting
to the beach.

Praia do Cristo - centre
Even despite light pollution of the praia do Cristo, during the
summertime this remains a popular beach among locals. The
beach is located at the foot of the Christ Statue near the old
harbor at the mouth of the Rio Cachoeira. The water is calm
and therefore ideal for local kids to swim in. The beach-bar
offers various drinks and frequently there are people that
sell all kinds of food like fresh meat from the bbq.

Praia do Malhado - 3 km
At the north side of the city, the praia do Molhado has some
barracas at the beach where you can drink, eat some snacks
and listen to music. The beach is very popular among locals
and the barraca “Pinah”, opposite of the Barravento Hotel, gets
crowded in the weekends. The barraca is open 24 hours.

Praia do Marciano - 4 km
A little further north lays the praia do Marciano, another
popular hangout for locals. There are a few barracas glued
to each other that all play loud music. That doesn’t seem to
bother the rather young crowd.

The Boca da Barra beach is a little beach hidden away at the
mouth of the Rio Almada.
